I'm Pregnant, but My Partner Doesn't Want to Help. What Can I Do?

Learning you’re pregnant can leave you feeling scared and worried, and finding out your partner is not supportive can feel even more overwhelming.

The good news is you are not alone. The information below can help guide your conversations with your partner and direct you to the help and support you need.

Responding to Your Partner’s Feelings

When you first told your partner about the pregnancy, they also likely felt panicked, overwhelmed, and maybe even angry. It might just be that they need time to process the news or learn more about what options are available in handling a pregnancy, especially if it was unplanned.

When speaking with your partner, always:

  1. Prioritize Your Safety: If your partner’s responses cause you to feel unsafe, do not hesitate to seek help. Reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE if you need assistance.
  2. Establish Boundaries: Communicate to your partner that you will not be forced into making a decision that you’re not comfortable with. Calmly reinforce the fact that the decision is ultimately yours to make.
  3. Get the Facts: Empower yourself to make the best decision by gathering as much information as possible about your pregnancy and your options. Being knowledgeable about your choice will enable you to discuss it with your partner confidently. This information may also help reassure your partner and address some of their fears or concerns.

Finding Support for Your Pregnancy

Many resources are available to you in your area that are specifically designed to help support you and your pregnancy.

These resources can include:

  • Assistance with the cost of medical appointments and the birth of the baby.
